What is UK Freesat?

Freesat is the United Kingdom's leading free satellite television platform, operated by Everyone TV — the joint venture of the BBC and ITV. It delivers over 170 UK channels completely free of charge — including BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three, BBC Four, ITV, ITV2, ITV3, Channel 4, More4, Channel 5, 5Star, Dave, Sky News, GB News, PBS America and many more — in full high definition, with no monthly subscription and no ongoing fees of any kind. Connect the receiver to a broadband internet connection and you also unlock Catch Up TV and On Demand services from BBC iPlayer, ITVX, My5 and All4.

Freesat is received via a satellite dish pointed at the Astra 28.2°E satellite, the same satellite cluster used for Sky TV in the UK. Once installed and aligned correctly, it provides a stable, high-quality picture with no internet dependency for live television — an important advantage in rural areas of France where broadband speeds can be variable.

Satellite Dish Sizes in France

Receiving UK Freesat in France requires a satellite dish correctly aligned to Astra 28.2°E. The size of dish required depends heavily on your location. In the north of France — Paris, Normandy, Brittany, the Loire Valley, Alsace — a dish of 60 to 80 cm is usually sufficient for reliable reception. As you move south, the satellite sits lower on the horizon and the signal weakens considerably.

In the Dordogne, Lot and Aveyron regions, a dish of 100 to 120 cm is typically needed. Further south still — in Toulouse, Montpellier, Marseille, Nice, the Var or the Côte d'Azur — you may require a dish of 150 cm or larger to achieve reliable BBC reception. Dishes of this size are substantial structures: they are expensive to purchase, require professional installation on a solid mounting, and can be difficult or impossible to install on certain properties due to planning restrictions, landlord rules, or co-ownership regulations.

⚠️ Important considerations before choosing Freesat for the south of France:
  • High winds: Large 150 cm dishes act as a sail in strong winds. Mistral and Tramontane conditions in southern France are notorious — a poorly anchored large dish can become a serious hazard.
  • Extreme weather: Heavy rain, snow and hail can cause temporary signal loss, particularly on the marginal signal levels experienced in southern France. This is known as "rain fade."
  • Lightning and static electricity: A large metallic dish is an effective antenna for atmospheric electrical discharge. During thunderstorms, static electricity and lightning strikes can travel down the coaxial cable directly to the tuner inside your receiver, causing irreparable damage — and potentially affecting other equipment connected to the same system.
  • Maintenance: Dishes require periodic realignment, especially after strong winds or structural movement. A professional visit each time adds to the long-term cost.
  • Initial installation cost: A professional installation with a 150 cm dish, waterproof connectors, cable runs and mounting hardware in southern France can represent a significant investment before you watch a single channel.
